Lawn or bare ground
If the patio is going where grass is now, the sod comes up, we dig to patio depth, and the soil gets compacted before any base goes in.
ANY SHAPE YOU WANT. ONE WAY TO BUILD IT.
Curves, borders, fire-pit areas and seating walls: a patio is the one paver surface where the design is wide open. The rules underneath it aren't, and that's where every job starts.
How we build it
A driveway has one job. A patio is where you actually get to design something. Curves instead of straight runs, a contrasting border, a fire-pit area set into the field, a seating wall along one edge — patio pavers give you more freedom than any other surface we build. Groundworks Pavers & Turf builds paver patios across Brevard County, from Titusville and Cocoa down through Viera, Melbourne, and Palm Bay, out to the beaches. If you've been calling patio companies and patio contractors around Brevard County and getting vague answers, here's ours: the design is yours. The ground rules are ours.
A patio doesn't carry a truck, so the base doesn't need driveway thickness — but the water rules don't relax an inch. Florida rain finds every low spot, and an open-sky patio takes all of it directly. So we build it the way we build everything: base compacted in lifts, graded to shed water away from the house, a thin bedding course, edge restraint anchored into the base and not the sand, joints locked with polymeric sand. Under a screened lanai the rain load drops, but the grading still matters — water that blows in at the edges has to get back out. Get the ground right, and the shape is the fun part.

Before the first paver
If the patio is going where grass is now, the sod comes up, we dig to patio depth, and the soil gets compacted before any base goes in.
Adding outdoor space past the screen. The new patio has to meet the lanai slab at the right height and still drain away from the house, so those heights get set first.
Most patios need a way in from the driveway, the side gate or the pool. A walkway can go in on the same base during the same job.
Start to finish
We look at where rain goes today, where the doors and the lanai sit, and how equipment gets to the back yard. Then you get a free written estimate.
Curves, borders and a fire-pit area get marked out in paint. You walk it and change it before anything is cut.
We dig to patio depth and set the pitch, so rain runs away from the house to a planned spot instead of pooling against the wall.
Thinner than a driveway base, since nothing drives on it. It still goes in a layer at a time, each one compacted before the next.
A thin screeded sand bed, then the pavers in the pattern you picked, cut to fit along curves and borders.
Edge restraint gets anchored into the base, the joints get polymeric sand, and we clean up and walk the finished patio with you.
Your written estimate is itemized. Our cost guide covers what moves the price.
What that means on your job
Curves, borders, banding, a fire-pit ring, a seating-wall edge — we lay the shape out on the ground with paint and walk it with you before a single cut happens. A patio you'll sit on every evening should be designed standing in the yard, not squinting at a drawing.
No vehicle load means a patio base runs thinner than a driveway's — but it still goes down in compacted lifts, still gets graded to move rain away from the house, and the edge restraint still anchors into the base, not the sand. Skipping that is how patios dip.
An open patio takes direct Florida rain and full sun — the sun that bakes color out of pavers. Sealing helps hold that color, wet-look or matte, your call. Under a screened lanai the weather eases up, but water still finds the edges, so the grade still has to move it out.

Questions
That's most of the point. Patios are the surface with real design freedom — sweeping curves, a contrasting border course, banding through the field, a circle around a fire pit, a seating wall along one side. We lay the proposed shape out on the ground before cutting anything, so what you approve standing in your yard is what gets built.
Thinner, because there's no vehicle load — but built the same way. The base still goes down in compacted lifts, still gets graded so rain sheds away from the house instead of pooling against it, and the edge restraint is anchored into that base, not into the bedding sand. The load changes. The water rules don't.
The Florida sun bakes color out of pavers, and an open patio sits in it all day. Sealer slows that down and gives you a finish choice — wet-look or matte. It has to go on clean, completely dry pavers or it clouds, so we don't rush that step. Plan on resealing roughly every 2-3 years.
Yes. We seal pavers other companies installed, and we re-sand joints with polymeric sand when they've washed out. If the patio has bigger problems — settled spots, a failed edge — we'll tell you what we find in a free written itemized estimate, and you decide from there. We build and service pavers and patios across Brevard County, Titusville to Melbourne Beach.
Paver installation starts at $8 per square foot. From there, size and shape set most of it. Curves, borders and a fire-pit area add cuts, and cuts take time. Access to the back yard decides how much gets moved by hand, grading adds work if water sits there today, and then there's the paver you pick. We measure your space and leave a free, itemized written estimate.
You can, and plenty of homeowners do. The hard part is everything under the pavers: digging out and hauling off soil, renting a plate compactor, building the base up in compacted lifts, screeding a thin, even sand bed, and setting a grade that sends rain away from the house. When a DIY patio dips, the usual cause is a base compacted in one pass or extra sand used to level it. Curves, borders and a fire-pit ring multiply the cuts.
By removing everything that will move later. On a lawn, the sod and roots come up first. Then we dig to patio depth, pull out soft or organic pockets instead of burying them, compact the soil underneath, and set the grade so rain runs away from the house. Only after that does the base go in, one compacted layer at a time. If the patio meets a lanai slab, those heights get set before anything is dug.
Use a standard concrete paver in a simple pattern, and keep the shape plain. Running bond or basketweave lays with few cuts, and a rectangle has less edge to restrain than a curve. Open access helps too, because a narrow gate means hand work. Travertine and premium lines cost more per piece. Don't save on the base, because fixing a base means lifting every paver on top of it. Our estimate is itemized, so you can see which choices move the price.
