In Rockledge, the oaks came first — we build the paver base to work with those roots and the water they route, not against them.

Rockledge is one of the older parts of the county, and it shows in the canopy — big oaks that have had decades to spread roots through yards graded long before anyone thought about a paver patio. That changes how we plan an installation here. We walk the site first, find where water already collects around root flare and low corners, and build the base to move it out instead of trapping it under new pavers.
Under mature trees the ground moves more than people expect — roots swell and settle, and grade shifts over the years in ways a flat yard never will. We compact the base in lifts and route around major roots so the sub-base isn't riding on wood that's going to move. Bedding sand stays close to an inch; thick sand is the shortcut that fails once a root pushes underneath. Edge restraint gets fastened into the compacted base, not the sand, so movement at the perimeter doesn't walk pavers off line.
What that looks like here
Before anything gets dug, we map where the canopy roots run and where water already pools around them. The base gets compacted in lifts to work with that ground instead of fighting it, so the patio isn't riding on root movement.
Established yards have settled grading that doesn't always move water the way it used to. We check where it goes before we build, and set slope into the base so the finished surface sheds water instead of holding it.
Driveways and anywhere a vehicle rolls get laid in herringbone — the interlocking pattern resists the shifting force of tires far better than a running bond, which matters on a driveway more than a patio.

The Brevard County tax roll counts 11,643 single-family homes in Rockledge, not counting its Viera subdivisions. The typical one was built in 1991, and about 62% were built before 2000.
With most homes here past twenty-five years old, many cracked or worn driveways and patios are ready to be replaced with pavers.
