A lot of Cocoa's older streets are still running the driveway and walkway that came with the house — original poured concrete, cracked and settled from years of sun and ground movement. When we install pavers here, that's usually what we're replacing. Riverfront lots add a wrinkle too, with a water table that sits closer to the surface than it does further inland, so how the base drains matters from the first shovel.
We compact the base in lifts and grade it to move water toward the street or a drain, which counts for more near the river than it does elsewhere. Bedding sand goes down close to an inch — thick sand is the shortcut that fails, especially once ground saturation from a wet season works underneath it. Edge restraint gets fastened into the compacted base, not the sand, and driveways go down in herringbone so the pattern locks against the shifting force of tires.
