A turf base gets compacted much like a paver base, while a drainfield needs the soil above it left loose, so we locate the tank and drainfield first and keep the turf off both. Turf in open sun runs hot on a summer afternoon. Under the oaks it collects leaves that have to be blown off before they break down into the infill. And if your home is inside a subdivision, check whether its HOA rules say anything about turf.
What that looks like here
We find the septic tank and drainfield before we lay anything out, and the turf goes around them, even if that leaves an odd-shaped patch of grass in the middle. We also keep it back from the tank lid, so the next pump-out doesn't mean cutting into new turf to reach it.
It might be a play area around the swing set or just the strip off the lanai. On acreage the size of the turf area is your call, and a smaller one costs less to build and is easier to keep clean. We'll mark it out with you on the ground before we write the estimate.

We don't recommend it, and we won't build a compacted turf base on top of one. A drainfield depends on the soil above it staying loose enough to take in water and air, and compacting a base over it works against that. We locate the drainfield during the walkthrough and lay the turf out around it. If you're unsure what's allowed over yours, ask your septic company.
Yes, for the part of the yard you turf. Turf doesn't need irrigation, so whoever services your system can usually cap or redirect the heads in that zone. On a well, that's also one less zone throwing iron-heavy water at the walkway and leaving orange rings. You'll still want a hose now and then to rinse the turf, especially in a pet area.
Down through the turf and into the base. Turf drains through its backing, so the real question is where the water goes after that, and that's set by how the base is graded before anything is laid. On a Malabar lot we set the fall toward ground that already takes water, like a swale or open yard, and away from the house, the well head and the drainfield.
